What Is Rolfing?
Rolfing is a long time established therapy that employs a deep intervention into the elastic
soft tissue structure. Structural Integration, (coined Rolfing,) was developed by Dr. Ida P. Rolf,
a PHD bio-chemist, a graduate of Columbia in the 1920's. Dr. Rolf explored physiology, anatomy and
movement for over forty years, part of her exploration was clearly influenced by her years spent in
Europe studying osteopathy and homeopathy.
Structural Integration is a form of bodywork that is designed to re-balance the connective tissue
through hands-on techniques and neural re-education. A multiple of results occur including a release
of tension and habitual holding patterns, creating muscular re-organization, increased flexibility and
a sense of well being.
The Ten Series
"gravity is the physician" Dr. Ida P. Rolf
The Ten Series is composed of 10 sequential sessions of Structural Integrative work. The Ten Series
is essentially broken into 3 sections: the first three sessions (1-3) are considered to be the sleeve
sessions, the next four sessions are the deeper core sessions (4-7), the last three sessions are used to
integrate the body moving the client from a state of static to dynamic embodiment. The sleeve sessions
(the outer most layers of our body) are used to open the sleeve so that the deeper work can occur. It
is normally recommended that you try one session, if the work seems helpful do sessions 2 and 3, this
work leaves you superficially integrated. The next sessions 4-7 work the body at a deeper level, these
are the sessions that unwind the structure allowing 'the self-correcting core, ' (Peter Levine) to re-emerge.
This is where the wisdom of our own bodies starts to employ its self-healing powers. The last three sessions
utilize more rolf movement techniques to help the client's body record the feeling of relaxed alignment and
encourages new patterns to replace habitual patterns that no longer serve the client.
If you are curious about Rolfing/Structural Integration bring your questions in for a half hour consultation
(at no charge.) Ten Series sessions, single sessions and advanced series sessions are available.
